Departments

UCLA ACCESS is conceptually divided into the following "ACCESS" departments:

  • Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
  • Biological Chemistry
  • Cellular & Molecular Pathology
  • Human Genetics
  • MBI IDP
  • Microbiology, Immunology, & Molecular Genetics
  • Molecular & Medical Pharmacology
  • Molecular Toxicology
  • Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology
  • Molecular, Cell & Integrative Physiology
  • Neurobiology
  • Oral Biology

Transfer to Degree Granting Program

At the end of the Spring quarter of the first year, students are evaluated by the Steering Committee on their academic progress. Those who meet the required academic standards (see below) will be recommended for continuation of their graduate studies. Once a research mentor has been selected, the student will transfer from ACCESS into the degree-granting program for the remainder of the Ph.D. studies. If the mentor is a member of more than one participating degree-granting program (not including the MBI-IDP), selection of the degree-granting program is a decision made by mutual agreement between student and mentor. Students wishing to transfer into the MBI-IDP in order to obtain their Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, and whose mentors are full members of the MBI-IDP, must submit an application for consideration directly to the IDP office. Irrespective of the mentor's affiliations, students may not transfer to the Neuroscience, Biomedical Physics, Biology (OBEE) or Psychology Ph.D. programs. Programs may not re-review ACCESS student admission credentials. At the time of transfer, students and degree-granting programs will be provided with a transition packet containing a Change of Major form, an individual funding profile, an admissions dossier, and first year coursework and lab rotation information.

Degree Requirements of Individual Programs

A listing of current departmental degree requirements (curriculum and rules governing advancement to candidacy) can be obtained directly from the participating programs. All programs acknowledge that the Fall quarter course in Molecular Biology or any of the three Winter quarter courses in Cell Biology will be accepted as fulfilling first-year curricular requirements at the time of transition.

Departments are nonetheless free to recommend a particular course.
